What is this funding opportunity?

Advancing Swine Research supports high-impact research addressing priority challenges facing Canada's pork sector. The program is designed to leverage industry investment with research expertise and additional funding to advance practical solutions that strengthen the resilience, sustainability and competitiveness of Canadian pork production.

Who is eligible to apply?

Individuals or organizations with proven expertise and/or a successful track record in conducting research projects in relevant fields are eligible to apply. This includes:

✔  Organizations & associations
✔  Government research institutions

What types of projects are funded?

​

• Discovery & Applied Research: Foundational and industry-driven research projects (up to $150,000 over three years).

• Short-Term "Quick Win" Projects: Pilot studies, proof-of-concept work, and economic impact assessments (typically under $50,000, completed within a year).

What types of projects are funded?

​

Discovery or Applied Research Projects: Core or early-stage research and applied research. Comprehensive projects addressing key priority topics will normally not exceed $150,000 over three years.

Short-Term Projects: "Quick win" initiatives such as economic impact studies, proof-of-concept projects, pilot studies, best management practices, and knowledge translation or demonstration projects. These are expected to have a timeline of one year or less, with smaller projects normally under $50,000.

What are the priority research areas?

​

Endemic Animal Diseases
Development of new technologies, tools and management strategies to mitigate risks of endemic diseases, safeguard herd health and support productivity.

Antimicrobial Use and Resistance
Development of evidence-based tools and strategies to reduce antimicrobial use, support responsible antimicrobial use, maintain animal health and reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance.

Building Technology and Design to Improve Efficiency
Creation of innovative designs, materials and technologies that reduce capital and operating costs, improve energy efficiency and promote productivity across all stages of production.

Biosecurity Tools and Technologies
Development and adoption of practical, effective and economically viable biosecurity tools and technologies that reduce disease introduction and transmission.

Improving Pork Safety and Shelf Life and Enhancing Pork Quality
Improved control of foodborne pathogens, extended shelf life of pork products, enhanced consumer trust in food safety and improved quality of pork products.

Improving Energy Use, Emissions and Water Efficiency in Swine Production
Development of practical technologies, tools and design strategies that improve resource efficiency, reduce environmental impacts and support economically viable barn construction and modernization.

How to Apply for SIP's Research Funding Call

​

1. Review the Guidelines
   Review the program guidelines and research priorities to determine whether your proposed project aligns with the call.
    

2. Complete the Letter of Intent
   Complete the Letter of Intent Form, including the proposed project's objectives, activities, expected outcomes, benefits to the Canadian pork industry, knowledge transfer approach and preliminary budget.
    

3. Submit Your Letter of Intent
   Email the completed Letter of Intent Form to research@swineinnovationporc.ca by November 13, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. EST.
    

4. Invitation to Submit a Full Proposal
   SIP will review the LOIs and invite selected applicants to submit a full proposal by December 10, 2026.
    

5. Full Proposal Stage
   Full proposal requirements and application materials will be provided directly to invited applicants. Full proposals will be due February 26, 2027 at 4:00 p.m. EST.
