Disease Risk and Antimicrobial Use in Swine: From Post-Weaning Diarrhea to System-Level Prevention

17 June 2026

Zoom Webinar

Post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) remains one of the most costly and frustrating health challenges facing swine producers today, contributing to poor pig performance, production losses, and increased reliance on antimicrobials in nursery systems. As pressure grows to reduce antibiotic use while maintaining herd health and productivity, understanding what drives disease risk—and how it can be prevented—has never been more important.

In this webinar, Dr. Vahab Farzan (University of Guelph) will share findings from Swine Cluster 4: Activity 12, a pan-Canadian epidemiological study examining the key risk factors, bacterial strains, and management challenges associated with PWD on Canadian swine farms. Dr. Gustavo Silva (Iowa State University) will then provide a broader systems-level perspective on how diseases such as PRRS and other endemic conditions spread within swine production systems, and how biosecurity, surveillance, and risk assessment strategies can help reduce disease pressure and support antimicrobial stewardship.

Together, these presentations will provide practical and forward-looking insights into how improving disease prevention and herd health management can help producers reduce treatment pressure, improve pig performance, and strengthen long-term sustainability in swine production.
